[NORMAN ROCKWELL CHARACTER] This is one of my favorite presidents, Abraham Lincoln, before he became president, and before he grew his beard. This picture tells the story of the first big case Lincoln tried when he was a young lawyer.
The man sitting behind Lincoln is wearing handcuffs. He was accused of murder. It was hopeless. Eyewitnesses said they saw him by the clear light of a full moon. Look at the little book Lincoln’s holding in his left hand. It’s the Almanac — the book that tracks the phases of the moon. Lincoln proved that the moon was only in its first quarter and about to set. it would have been too dark to see clearly. The man went free.
[NORMAN ROCKWELL CHARACTER] Now that you know the story — look at how I decided to tell it. Lincoln stands in front of the man, like he’s protecting him. He’s dressed all in white, and he almost glows. He looks extra tall. That’s ‘cause we’re looking at him from below.
Even though he’s so big, you’re not afraid of him. He’s taken off his jacket and his suspenders. His hair’s a little messed up. His tie is coming undone. He is “Abraham Lincoln” –but he’s also a regular guy. I liked that about him.

Norman Rockwell: Este es uno de mis presidentes favoritos, Abraham Lincoln, antes de que fuera presidente y antes de que se dejara crecer la barba. Esta pintura relata el primer caso importante en el que participó Lincoln cuando era un joven abogado. El hombre sentado detras de Lincoln tiene las manos esposadas. Estaba acusado de asesinato, y había testigos que afirmaban haberlo visto bajo la luz de la luna llena.
Ve el pequeño libro que Lincoln sostiene en la mano izquierda. Es el almanaque, un libro que indica las fases de la luna. Lincoln comprobó que la luna estaba tan solo en su primer cuarto creciente, y estaba a punto de desaparecer de los cielos, por lo que habría estado demasiado oscuro para ver con claridad. Así el hombre fue puesto en libertad. Ahora que ya sabes lo ocurrido, observa cómo decidí contarlo.
Lincoln aparece de pie frente al hombre, como si lo estuviera protegiendo. Está vestido todo de blanco y casi parece brillar. Luce particularmente alto, lo cual se debe a que lo estamos viendo desde abajo. Aunque es muy alto, no inspira temor, se ha quitado el saco y bajado los tirantes. Su cabello está un poco desordenado, y el nudo de la corbata esta flojo. Es Abraham Lincoln, pero también es un hombre común. Eso me agradaba de él.
