[NORMAN ROCKWELL CHARACTER] This painting is from 1947. I made this painting to be a little like a movie with the middle cut out. What’s left is: The beginning, on the top and the end, on the bottom.
It’s called “Going and Coming.” You get to fill in the rest of what happened in between.
Start up on the top. Where do you think this family’s going? Must be somewhere exciting, ‘cause that kid is hanging out the window as far as the dog is. They’ve got a rowboat on top of the car, so that gives you a clue. Can you read upside down to see the name of the boat?
Now, go to the bottom. Coming back things are a little different. Old Dad, up front driving, looks pooped. Mom has conked out, and the kids–well, they look like they’ve been busy. Look at the car door handles. I don’t know if you’ve ever done this, but when folks used to come home from swimming, they’d hang their wet bathing suits outside the car, like this family. You had to make sure you tied them on tight, though.
So–who do you think had the best time? Who had the worst time? And who looks exactly the same going and coming?

Empieza en la cima. ¿Adónde crees que va a ir esta familia? Debe ser un lugar emocionante, porque ese niño está colgando por la ventana hasta donde está el perro. Tienen un bote de remos encima del auto, así que eso te da una pista. ¿Puedes leer al revés para ver el nombre del barco?
Ahora, ve al fondo. Al volver, las cosas son un poco diferentes. El viejo papá, conduciendo al frente, parece hecho polvo. Mamá se ha desmayado, y los niños… bueno, parece que han estado ocupados. Mira las manijas de las puertas del auto. No sé si alguna vez has hecho esto, pero cuando la gente volvía a casa después de nadar, colgaban sus trajes de baño mojados fuera del coche, como esta familia. Pero tenías que asegurarte de atarlos bien.
