PETER ROCKWELL: Here, a brave Boy Scout rescues a little girl from a flood. This image, called “A Scout is Helpful,” appeared on the 1941 Boy Scout Calendar. It illustrates the ideal of helpfulness, one of the twelve values of the Scout Law, and was inspired by real events in the great New England Hurricane of 1938.
PERO: Then, … on the Scout’s shoulder, … is a kitten … showing that he’s rescuing the family pet, as well.
NARRATOR: Curator, Linda Pero:
PERO: The Boy … Scouts would often send the painting back to Rockwell to make changes. … The details and the pictures were … always … very closely scrutinized. … The original version showed …the Scout in … long pants. … But the painting was returned to Rockwell because … he was told that … it wouldn’t look neat to have … the pants wet in the painting. And so he painted the scout … with … shorts instead of long pants.
PETER ROCKWELL: My father sometimes had difficulty convincing his amateur models that he wanted them to look just like they did on an ordinary day. The young girl in this painting arrived to model dressed up in her best party outfit, with carefully curled ringlets. My father led her to the sink and doused her hair under the faucet. Off came her shiny shoes. He covered her dress with a quilt to make her appear more like a flood victim.

Hombre: En esta obra, un valiente Boy Scout rescata una pequeña durante una inundación. Esta imagen, llamada Los Scouts son serviciales, apareció en el calendario de los Boy Scouts de 1941. Ilustra el ideal de servicio, uno de los 12 valores de la ley de los Scouts, y estuvo inspirada en sucesos reales ocurridos durante el gran huracán que azotara Nueva Inglaterra en 1938.

Linda Pero: Los Boy Scouts con frecuencia, le enviaban de regreso la pintura a Rockwell, a fin de que le hiciera cambios. Todos los detalles e imágenes eran examinados minuciosamente. Hombre: Ocasionalmente, mi padre tenía dificultades para convencer a sus modelos no profesionales de que quería que lucieran justo como lo harían en un día común y corriente. La niña de esta pintura llegó a modelar vestida con un elegante atuendo de fiesta con el cabello cuidadosamente rizado. Mi padre la condujo al lavabo y le humedeció la cabeza bajo el grifo; le quitó sus zapatos relucientemente limpios, y cubrió su vestido con una cobija para hacerla lucir como víctima de una inundación.
